We designed and handed out a questionnaire to 30 different people in order to gather information on what conventions people like or expect to see in a music video and what conventions are expect for different genre’s. Of the 30 people surveyed, 24 were in the age rage of 16-24 which is good for our research as we believe this is the age group that will contain our target audience. The majority of these 24 were also male and our genre of music that we are planning to use for our music video (rock/metal) was shown to appeal more to males than females.
According to our research, the Internet is the most popular place to view music video’s so it makes sense for us to post the final product on websites such as YouTube to gather post-production audience feedback on our music video. However our research shows that 19 out of 30 people only watch music videos less than 5 times a week. This shows that it is important to create other media products, such as a band website, to showcase our media work.
Our research shows that the most popular music genre is rock with 20 out of 30 people saying it is their most listened to genre. The second most popular being pop and then third as metal. This is good as our video will be for the rock/metal genre meaning it will appeal to a large percentage of people from our target audience and therefor hopefully promote the video more.
For types of music video, our research shows the narrative is the most popular, followed by concept second and performance a close third. As we plan to do a performance and narrative based video, it is important that we focus on the narrative to make sure it is of a high standard and will interest the audience. Also, 27 out of 30 people said that they prefer a narrative that links into the lyrics rather than a separate, unrelated narrative. This shows how important in is to link lyrics and visuals during the narrative and our current planned narrative we believe fits the lyrics well.
For the performance side of our video, we found that 22 out of 30 people preferred to see footage of the band playing in a set or other location as opposed to footage of a live performance of the band. In our music video, we plan to use a couple of different locations for the performance, aspect of the video, such as an airfield, as firstly this will appeal more to our target audience as shown by our research, and secondly this is a lot easier than setting up a “mock” live performance of the band as gathering an audience to have in the footage would be very difficult.
