My first music video idea is for the song "Backdraft" of Thrice's album "The Alchemy index Vol: 1". It can be viewed here:
For this song I think the rather sedate and eerie feeling of the verses would be suited to a narrative, particularly since the lyrics are fairly descriptive. The chorus is faster and much louder with particular emphasis on the vocals so therefore would probably be more suited to a performance. Therefore my idea is to combine both elements throughout the video.
Narrative:
I have taken my inspiration for the narrative from my interpretation of the lyrics which I have annotated below:
The main concept I have come up with for the narrative would involve a woman in a white dress wondering around the grounds of an antique looking house as well as other desolate looking locations such as a beac or coastal marsh of some kind. At the same time the lead singer who acts as the protagonist in this narrative would be sitting back in an armchair in the libary or lounge of a very wealthy looking house.
During the course of the video both characters would fairly frequently come across a door of some kind with white light radiating out. Near the end of the song (probably after the second chorus) the woman in the white dress would pass through the door. When the two characters see each other the whole world around them will go bright and reveal that they haven’t been living in the “real” world. This will be shown by changing the location back to some kind of fairly modern looking everyday location, such as a house.
Performance:
During the verse only the guitarist and vocalist will be seen performing, both of them will be in shadow. The guitarist would be performing with an acoustic guitar which is the only thing properly illuminated and will be mostly shown through close-ups. The vocalist will only be seen from the side with only one side of his face illuminated. A vast majority of the shots will be close-ups which hide most of the performers from sight.
During the chorus the whole band will be visible, they will play in a large open location with a series of red lighting or fire behind them. There would also be water falling while a large fan blows to give the impression of a "storm". Most of the shots would be long, wide and mid shots which will emphasize the bands perfornace as a whole.
Editing and post-production:
During the verse the editing would be slow paced to fit the music. We would include time lapse shots of clouds and plants growing, this would create confusions over space and time making the video less typical looking. many of the other shots would be spead up and given a flashing "strobe" lighting effect. Some scenes or shots could also be reversed, although we would have to wait until the editing phase to see if this works.
We would match the increase in volume of the chorus with a slightly increase in pace of editing, the actual effects used in the shots would mainly be physical; for example lighting and rain however some kind of colour tin such as sepia tone may work well with the track.
