Textual Analysis- Pendulum Website

For our second ancillary task we intend to design a web page to promote our artist. Most websites are designed to allow the fans of the band to access more content as well as promoting the artist to other members of the audience. I have chosen to analyse the webpage for the Australian dance-rock band Pendulum.

http://www.pendulum.com/

The purpose of this text is immediately made clear by the artists name in large bold font at the top of the page. Below this there is a window which scrolls through different advertisements, 2 are for the bands tours and one is for the bands most recent album titled “Immersion”. On the right they have a list of their upcoming shows and below that is a window with links to their music and merch stores. All of these elements point to one main convention of artist web pages, namely that they are primarily designed to promote the artists music and products so that the audience may be more likely to part with their cash in the name of entertainment.

Another way in which the web page allows the audience to integrate the artist further into their life is by including links to other websites which contain content relating to the band. I counted references to at least 12 different websites on the front page of their webpage alone. Some of these were to websites selling the bands content such as Amazon and Itunes, however there are also links to social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace, which allow the audience to access the bands content and news while using these websites in their day to day lives. Additionally the news feed in the centre of the page allows the audience to see the latest updates relating to the band, it even allows users of their “Otherside” platform to make comments on recent news items. This allows the fans to get closer to the band through sharing their opinions with other fans.

The webpage is also very densely populated by different types of media relating to the band, for example on the left hand side close to the bottom of the page there are tabs in which you can watch videos and browse through photos of the band, this will be pleasing to fans of the bands since it allows them to get closer to them while also helping to show new users of the site what the band are about. There is also a media player in the top right hand corner which allows users to listen to some of the bands tracks; this will provide more of an incentive for a purchase to people who like what they hear.

The website is designed in a fairly consistent manner, for example I like the way the 3 columns of tabs in the lower half fit well with the size of the content included. This is complemented by the similar brownish colour band at the top of each tab which provides consistency. The main colour scheme consists mostly of: whites, blacks, greys and reds; this fairly plain colour scheme is used rather effectively to give the whole page a “Mechanical” feel about it. In addition to this the fairly plain colour scheme allows a variety of images to be placed in the news feed and photos tab without the risk of the colours clashing.

Overall I think this is a very effective website because it looks the part as well as providing access to a mass of content relating to the band. For our own website we will need to work on making it as “Media Dense” as possible in addition to maintaining design consistency.

  1. Good comments.
Are there things on this website that you would like to try and include on your?
As you start to film your own music video make sure that you are taking a lot of photos as you can then use these to populate your web site
